Build it vs. Buy a kit

Everything priced for your setup: a 2×4 tent, coco coir + auto-drip, 2 photoperiod plants, no CO₂, tuned for max yield. This is a decision aid to talk through, not a locked cart.

⚡ The short answer (then explore the numbers)

For a 2×4 without CO₂, yield maxes out at roughly a 280–330W efficient light (~800–900 PPFD). Any kit that already includes a ≥300W light is at the yield ceiling — so building does not grow you more bud. Building costs more, and what that money buys is control: the exact light, real automation, premium odor control, better meters, and CO₂-readiness for later.

So your instinct is right: a kit is cheaper. The honest trade is cheaper + hits max yield now (kit) vs. ~$400–600 more for exactly-how-you-want-it + CO₂-ready (build).

🔦 The catch that trips people up: the cheap AC Infinity 2×4 kit ships with a 200W IONBOARD — below the max-yield sweet spot. You only get their 280W EVO3 light in the ~$812 EVO3 kit or the $999 PRO kit. The Mars Hydro SP3000 kit (~$399) already includes a 300W light that reaches the ceiling — which is why it's the cheapest max-yield-capable kit on the board.

🔧Build it — à-la-carte

Pick each part; the total at the bottom updates live. Green = my max-yield recommendation. Use the presets to jump between a max-yield build and the cheapest build that still hits the ceiling. Items tagged in kits are usually already included when you buy a kit.

🛒Buy a kit — best all-in-one systems

Each kit's light wattage tells you if it reaches the no-CO₂ yield ceiling. Green = hits it, orange = under-powered for max yield. "Still need to add" is the consumables no kit includes — those match your à-la-carte picks above, so the head-to-head stays apples-to-apples.

⚖️Head-to-head (updates with your picks)

Your consumables total (the parts you'd add to any kit) is $0. Below, "all-in" = kit price + your consumables, compared to your full à-la-carte build.

your à-la-carte picks

exactly your light/fan/filter/automation
Yes Only route that's CO₂-ready and 100% your spec. Costs the most for the same no-CO₂ yield.

🧪 When building actually earns its extra cost: (1) you want true hands-off auto-drip tuned for coco; (2) apartment odor is critical, so you want a Phresh/Can-Lite or refillable premium filter; (3) you'll add CO₂ later and want a bigger light (EVO6/HLG) ready for 1000–1500 PPFD; (4) you value the build quality/warranty ecosystem and dialing every part. If none of those grab you, a 300W kit + your consumables is the smart-money max-yield play.
